Updated June 24, 2025
The Hague - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking at the Forum of Defense Industries, appealed to NATO members to increase investment in Ukraine’s defense sector, notably in the production of weapons and drones. He emphasized Ukraine’s potential to become a major producer of defense equipment, including advanced drones.
Zelensky stated that Ukraine has the capacity to produce 8 million drones annually, but current funding levels limit actual production. He highlighted that the country’s defense production potential exceeds $35 billion, encompassing nearly 1,000 types of products, from customary artillery to advanced missiles. However, about 40% of this potential lacks necessary funding.
The Ukrainian president also accused Russia of rejecting peace proposals and leveraging resources from countries like North Korea and iran to support its military efforts. He stressed the need for joint defense production and stricter measures to limit cooperation with Russia.
Zelensky warned that Russia is planning potential military operations on NATO territory, urging allies to prepare and deter Russian President Vladimir Putin in ukraine. He emphasized that stopping Putin in Ukraine is crucial, as his ambitions extend beyond the country’s borders.
“We must take the lead in the drone race, whether it’s attack drones or interceptors, and continue to progress in the production of traditional weapons, taking into account all the lessons learned from this long war. I invite our partners to increase their investments in the production of Ukrainian and joint weapons,” Zelensky said.
What’s next
Zelensky hopes that increased investment from NATO members will allow Ukraine to fully realise its defense production potential and strengthen the security of Europe.
