For some mainland students studying in Hong Kong, the pressure to meet deadlines is a harsh reality. Not only do they have to complete their studies, but they also have to find a job before their visa expires in order to stay in the city.

Meet Tony, a mainland student who came to Hong Kong as an exchange student three years ago. Unlike many Hong Kong residents who are looking to move north for work, Tony wants to stay in Hong Kong and find a job. He holds a student visa, which is set to expire soon, and is racing against time to secure employment.

Tony, who studied architecture at the Polytechnic University, is one of over 130 mainland students who were admitted to eight universities in Hong Kong through a scholarship program. While some of his peers are returning to the mainland or going abroad for further studies, Tony is determined to find a job in Hong Kong.

Despite facing numerous rejections and disappointments, Tony remains optimistic. He has applied for over 30 jobs and is focusing on finding work in the construction or management sectors. However, with his visa expiration date looming, Tony is starting to feel the pressure.

In a recent interview, Tony shared his thoughts on Hong Kong and why he wants to stay. “It’s an international modern city,” he said. “Compared to Shanghai, Hong Kong has a more developed infrastructure and a unique cultural identity.”

After months of searching, Tony finally found a job in a construction company. He was overjoyed and relieved, and celebrated with his girlfriend in Central’s Lan Kwai Fong.

Tony’s story is a testament to the determination and resilience of mainland students in Hong Kong. Despite the challenges they face, many are determined to stay and make a life for themselves in the city.
