Oliver‍ Anthony: Country Star Walks Away From Industry, Citing ‘Degenerative’ Practices

Rising ‍country music star Oliver Anthony, known for his breakout⁢ hit “Rich Men North of Richmond,” has announced his intention to leave the music industry adn pursue ministry. In a‌ candid 15-minute video, Anthony revealed his ⁤disillusionment with the industry’s practices, calling them “degenerative” and‍ “manipulative.”

Anthony expressed‌ his discomfort with the industry’s focus on‍ manufactured “moments”⁤ and artificial hype.He criticized the practice of⁤ buying streams‍ and chart positions, stating, “They’ll spend a million dollars buying ⁤their own song to jump it ‌up the charts where people start ‍to‍ see‌ it. These are⁤ all ‌just systems.”

While acknowledging that these practices aren’t inherently malicious, Anthony believes they create a disingenuous environment. he described his experiences in nashville as “scary,” feeling pressured to conform to a manufactured⁢ persona.

“When they get you in there, it’s ⁤like‍ they definitely try to figure out how to build a character around ⁤you⁣ that fits what they want and makes you⁢ cool and they put you in that category,” he said. “And the⁣ second ⁣you step outside of that, you just get so much‌ friction from it.”

Anthony⁣ recounted instances where projects ⁤were stalled⁣ or⁤ manipulated, leaving him feeling‌ discouraged and stifled. He‍ cited a specific example where he was asked to publicly praise Beyoncé’s country album, which he deemed “complete trash.”

“It makes me just want to throw up trying to listen to‍ the beginning of her version of⁤ ‘Jolene,’” he said. “It’s just total cringe. It represents⁢ how degenerative our society has become⁣ that‌ a Beyonce version of ‘Jolene’ can come out ⁣and anybody ⁢actually listen to it and think it’s not just complete (expletive) trash.”

Despite his⁢ departure from the industry, Anthony has stated his intention to continue making music ⁢while pursuing his calling in ministry.
