The county championship match saw Gay score an unbeaten 156, while Lees reached 100 not out, securing his second century of the match with the final ball before the match concluded at 5 p.m.
The partnership between Lees and Gay set a new Durham record against Surrey for any wicket, surpassing the 183 runs scored by will Smith and Scott Borthwick in 2013. Durham began the day by pushing thier overnight score of 343-9 to 362, with Ben Raine, despite an injury, providing resistance to Surrey’s bowlers.
Early morning rain delayed play until midday, reducing the number of overs available. Surrey, having posted a massive 820-9 declared in their first innings on a flat pitch, asked Durham to follow on, leaving the visitors with 70 overs to bat.
