Northamptonshire secured a hard-fought draw against Middlesex in the County Championship encounter at Lord’s, recovering from a first-innings deficit to avoid defeat on the final day of the match.

After conceding a 102-run lead following Middlesex’s first innings of 287, Northants responded with 301 all out in their second innings, setting the visitors a target of 200 to win. Middlesex reached 154 for 6 before rain halted play, leaving the match drawn and both sides sharing the points.

The turning point came on the fourth day when Northants’ lower order resisted Middlesex’s pace attack. Liam Patterson-White top-scored with an unbeaten 72, while Ben Sanderson contributed 41 not out as the pair added 89 for the ninth wicket to steady the innings after Northants had slumped to 182 for 7.

Earlier in the match, Middlesex had posted 287 in their first innings, anchored by a century from opener Max Holden, who made 107 before being dismissed by Sanderson. Northants’ reply of 221 left them trailing, but Holden’s second-innings fifty — 52 before falling to leg-spinner Graeme White — suggested Middlesex might push for a win.

However, Northants’ bowlers struck back in the second innings. White finished with 4 for 56, including the wickets of Holden and Joe Cracknell, while Sanderson claimed 3 for 42. Their efforts restricted Middlesex to 154 for 6 at the close, with Tom Helm unbeaten on 48 and Holden on 26 not out.

The result leaves Northants with 10 points from their first four matches in Division One, sitting seventh in the table. Middlesex remain eighth with nine points, having drawn three of their four fixtures so far this season.

Match Summary

Middlesex 287 & 154-6 (Holden 107 & 52, White 4-56, Sanderson 3-42)

Northants 221 & 301 (Patterson-White 72*, Sanderson 41*, Holden 1-41)
