‍ ‍ Updated May 26, 2025

Sam Curran’s impressive batting performance steered Surrey to a draw against Essex in thier County Championship match⁤ at the Kia‍ oval. Curran, making his first red-ball appearance sence last September, added 77 runs to his first-innings score of 70. His effort was crucial as Surrey finished on 289-7⁣ on a rain-affected final day.

Curran’s 121-ball innings held Surrey’s batting together, countering‍ threats from Essex’s ⁤Jamie Porter and Simon Harmer. multiple rain delays, though brief, reduced the day’s play by 20 ⁤overs, ‍hindering Essex’s push for victory. A 51-run partnership between‍ Jamie Overton and Jordan Clark ultimately⁤ proved decisive‍ for Surrey.

Overton’s resilient 47 came from 102 balls before he edged Porter to third slip just before 6 p.m. Clark remained ‍not out on 23. Porter⁤ finished with 5-88 from 27 overs, while Harmer took 2-94 from 34. ⁤Essex earned 11 points for the draw, while Surrey, who remain second in Division one, secured 12 points.

Surrey began ⁤the day at 32 without loss, chasing a target of 418 after essex posted 479 in their second innings, highlighted by centuries from Paul Walter and ⁤Charlie Allison. Rory Burns and Dom Sibley started strongly, building ‍a 76-run partnership before Harmer struck.

Burns, on 39, was stumped by Michael Pepper off Harmer’s bowling. Sibley, after reaching 40, also fell to Harmer in a similar fashion, with Pepper completing another stumping.

after lunch, Kurtis Patterson and Curran stabilized Surrey’s‍ innings, reaching 142-2. Curran began his innings aggressively, hooking Porter for a six. However, Patterson was later bowled by Porter for 40.

Essex gained momentum when Porter dismissed Ben Foakes ⁢and Jason Roy in quick succession, leaving Surrey at 167-5. Foakes ⁤was caught behind ⁤for seven, and Roy was ⁣caught by Harmer at second⁤ slip.

Curran and ⁤Overton then forged a 77-run partnership, before Curran was caught ⁣by Allison off his own ⁢square drive, giving Essex renewed hope ‍with Surrey at 244-6.

Further rain ‍interruptions followed, and despite⁢ Essex’s efforts, Surrey’s seventh-wicket ⁣pair held on until ⁢Overton’s dismissal, securing the draw.

What’s next

Surrey will look to build on this result in their upcoming matches as ‍thay aim to maintain their position in Division One of the County Championship.
