OVIEDO, Spain (May 3, 2025) – A couple in the Asturias region of northwest Spain has been arrested on charges of holding their three children in what authorities describe as inhumane conditions sence 2021. The children were allegedly kept masked and isolated from the outside world.
The children, 8-year-old twins and their 10-year-old brother, were discovered living in squalor in a home in the suburbs of Oviedo. Authorities reported the residence was filled with excrement, soiled diapers, and sick animals. The children allegedly lacked basic hygiene, education, and any external contact, effectively living in isolation for nearly four years.
The father, a 53-year-old German national, and the mother, a 48-year-old with dual German and American citizenship, have been placed in pre-trial detention. Regional government social services have taken custody of the children, who appeared traumatized and had been kept out of school.
neighbor’s Tip Leads to revelation
The inquiry began April 14 after a neighbor, noticing movements and shadows of children through the windows and concerned about never seeing them leave the house, contacted municipal services.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that the family rarely opened their front door, except when the father retrieved large grocery orders. After obtaining a search warrant, police arrived at the home. the father, who was barefoot, answered the door and reportedly acknowledged the presence of the children, urging officers to keep their distance.
According to a police officer at the scene, the children were “terrorized, huddled around their mother, who said they were suffering from serious illnesses.” The officer added that the children seemed to exist in their own reality. One child, upon exiting the house, reportedly touched grass for the first time with amazement. All three children took deep breaths, seemingly experiencing fresh air for the first time.
“House of Horrors” Dismantled
Francisco Javier Lozano, chief commissioner of the local police, expressed his dismay. “We dismantled the House of Horrors,” Lozano said. “The investigation is ongoing to determine the couple’s motivations and to fully assess the physical and psychological state of the children, who are now safe.”
The case raises concerns about monitoring isolated families, the impact of prolonged school absenteeism, and the potential long-term consequences stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
