A romantic outing at the renowned Marble Arch Caves in county Fermanagh took an unexpected and dramatic turn when torrential rainfall triggered a flash flood, transforming a planned “surprise” date into an unforgettable, albeit damp, adventure.
Alistair Hay described the experience, organized by his wife Kim, as “definitely one of the most memorable,” recounting how the natural spectacle unfolded with surprising intensity. “At the time, we didn’t feel just how scary it was,” Mr. Hay admitted, reflecting on the initial moments of the ordeal.
Unexpected Deluge in the Depths
The couple was part of a group of 17 visitors exploring the subterranean marvels on what had begun as a pleasant, “dry afternoon.” The sudden shift in weather caught everyone off guard. “It wasn’t something we had planned for, something we were dressed for,” Mr. Hay explained, highlighting the unpreparedness for the dramatic turn of events.
the first sign of trouble came with a radio warning about impending heavy rain, quickly followed by a disconcerting power outage. “We were there in darkness,” Mr. Hay recalled, painting a vivid picture of the sudden blackness. Fortunately,the emergency generators kicked in swiftly,restoring light within 15 seconds.
The Cave’s Fury Unleashed
As the group ventured deeper into the cave system, the sound of rushing water became increasingly apparent. “it was literally just like a tap turned on,” Mr. Hay said, emphasizing the sudden and powerful influx of water. Initially, there was no widespread concern among the explorers.
However, their perception shifted as they encountered a more notable challenge.”We went down the cave further where there was a waterfall coming down over the pathway,” he described. the group’s experienced guide quickly assessed the situation and devised a plan, with additional staff arriving to assist.
“At that stage, we realised that we were going to have to go through the water,” Mr.Hay stated. The primary concern for many was simply getting wet, but the force of the water presented a more significant obstacle.”With the force of it coming down, we all got soaked.”
The situation escalated when the group observed “another cascade of water coming down what would have been the exit stairs.” It was at this point that “people really started to get more concerned,” Mr. Hay noted.
A Story Worth Telling
Despite the challenging conditions, the ascent up the stairs proved to be a test of resilience. Mr. Hay praised the staff’s composure, stating, “We knew that they were doing exactly what they had trained for.” He vividly recalled the “heavy force of water coming down, really pushing against us.”
In a moment of lightheartedness amidst the drama, Mr.Hay joked that by the end, “the two of us were dressed for such an occasion,” referring to their soaked attire. He humorously added that his wife was “more concerned about her handbag than she was about me.”
Upon safely exiting the caves, the group was provided with much-needed warmth in the form of teas, coffees, and hoodies. “They looked after us really well,” Mr.Hay expressed, grateful for the care received.Reflecting on the extraordinary experience,Mr. Hay concluded, “It was something that you never expect to be a part of. It was just the timing of it.” The couple remains determined to return and complete their original date, cherishing the “great story to tell.”
“I don’t know how I am ever going to manage a surprise date for Kim that would be as memorable as this one,” Mr. Hay mused, acknowledging that his wife had undoubtedly set a new benchmark for unforgettable experiences. “I think she has won the competition on that.”
