Courtney B. Vance on Stepping Into Lance Reddick’s Role in ‘Percy Jackson’
When Courtney B. Vance was offered the role of Zeus in the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians,it came with a heavy weight. He was replacing his close friend, Lance Reddick, who tragically passed away after portraying the god of olympus in the first season. The decision wasn’t simply about accepting a job; it was about honoring Reddick’s memory.
“I was reluctant because Lance was a dear friend,” Vance said. “So I was like, ‘what do I do? How do I honor him?'” He and reddick frequently auditioned for the same parts throughout their careers, forging a bond that transcended professional rivalry. On his first day on set, the production team paused for a moment of silence in Reddick’s honor.
Vance explained that he spoke with Reddick’s widow, Stephanie Reddick, before accepting the role. Her blessing was crucial. “She said, ‘Lance would want you to do it,'” Vance recalled. “That was everything. That gave me the courage to step forward.”
He approaches the role with a deep respect for Reddick’s work and a desire to build upon the foundation he laid. Vance doesn’t aim to imitate Reddick’s portrayal, but rather to offer his own interpretation of Zeus, informed by his friendship and admiration.
“I want to honor what Lance brought to it, but I also want to bring my own flavor,” Vance said. “It’s a delicate balance, but I think it’s one that I can achieve.”
Vance’s commitment to honoring his friend extends beyond the screen. he speaks fondly of Reddick’s generosity, his dedication to his craft, and his unwavering spirit. He hopes to carry those qualities with him as he embodies the powerful god of Olympus.
