November 22, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Covered California Open Enrollment for 2025

Covered California launched its “Let’s Talk Health” campaign as open enrollment for 2025 begins. Open enrollment runs from November 1, 2023, to January 31, 2025. During this time, Californians can sign up for health insurance, renew, or shop for new plans.

Jessica Altman, Executive Director of Covered California, emphasized that the Affordable Care Act is still in effect. Financial assistance for health coverage remains available regardless of the 2024 election outcomes. In fact, Californians will see record financial help in 2025.

Key Dates and Enrollment Information

  • Open Enrollment Period: Nov. 1, 2023 – Jan. 31, 2025.
  • Current Enrollment: Nearly 1.8 million Californians are enrolled through Covered California.

This is the 12th year of open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act, which has significantly increased health insurance coverage across the U.S. California’s enhanced cost-sharing reduction program will make coverage more affordable in 2025.

Financial Support for Californians

For 2025, the cost-sharing reduction program will receive $165 million in state funding. All Californians with incomes above 200% of the federal poverty level can now enroll in a plan with no deductibles. Californians with lower incomes will continue to get higher benefits.

In 2024, this program benefited over 800,000 consumers by lowering costs for drugs and medical visits.

Current Insurance Landscape

The uninsured rate in California is currently 6.4%, the lowest ever recorded. Since 2013, the rate has dropped from 17.2%. However, about 1.3 million Californians remain uninsured and may qualify for financial assistance or Medi-Cal.

  • Eligible Uninsured:
    • 591,000 qualify for subsidies.
    • 675,000 are eligible for Medi-Cal.

Health Literacy Campaign

The “Let’s Talk Health” campaign aims to improve health literacy among Californians. Covered California will provide materials in multiple languages to help consumers understand their options and benefits. The campaign collaborates with libraries to host workshops and distribute resources.

DACA Recipients

Starting November 1, 2023, DACA recipients can enroll in Covered California. This change allows around 40,000 DACA recipients in California to access health coverage.
