There is ongoing scientific debate about the increase in heart problems ⁢such as myocarditis and pericarditis in children and young adults. is ⁣this caused⁤ by ⁢the COVID-19 virus, the‌ COVID-19 vaccines, or a combination of both?

The first ⁤clear signals in the biomedical literature that the risk of heart inflammation was greater for boys and young‌ men from the jab (Pfizer: 5.31 and Moderna 13.83 per 100,000) than from the virus (1.37 per 100,000) date back too April‌ 2022 (Ref.1, see our article‍ here).

The risk ⁣of myocarditis in this large cohort study was highest in young males after the second SARS-CoV-2 ‌vaccine dose, and this risk should be balanced against ⁣the benefits of protecting against severe COVID-19 disease.

However, ‌at the end of 2025 (online in‌ November), an article appeared in The‍ Lancet Child & Adolescent Health ⁤(2) suggesting the opposite: the risk of heart inflammation is higher after infection (2.24 per 100,000) than⁤ after vaccination (0.85 ⁣per 100,000). This⁤ finding was widely reported in the news and ⁤on⁢ social media in November.

How is that possible?

Illuminating is the letter of concern from researcher Dr. Clare‌ Craig to The⁤ Lancet Child & adolescent⁣ Health (January 2026) regarding ⁤this article (link and also ref.‌ 3).

Her main criticism of the Lancet ⁤Child & Adolescent Health study:

  • The study analyzes infection and vaccination as separate events that do not influence each other. ⁣It does⁢ not take ‌into⁤ account⁤ the effect of vaccination on subsequent⁤ infection. And that happens often: because vaccination does not prevent infection.
  • Overestimation of infection risks: ‌The‍ study estimates 2.24 cases of myocarditis/pericarditis per 100,000 children up ‍to 6‌ months after infection, but this is much higher than the 0.5 per 100,000 in an‌ earlier ‍study of unvaccinated individuals‌ after Covid-19.
  • Opaque corrections: Raw incidence after vaccination is 13.9⁢ per 100,000 per⁢ year
