A heavily mutated subvariant of the virus that causes COVID-19, officially designated as BA.3.2 and nicknamed Cicada, has emerged as a primary concern for scientists due to its prevalence among children. While overall COVID-19 circulation remains at low levels, this specific variant is appearing to break previous patterns by targeting younger populations rather than primarily affecting older adults.

The variant is described as a sleeper branch of the Omicron family tree. It earned the name Cicada in reference to the insect’s biological tendency to disappear and then re-emerge after years spent underground.

Detection and Geographic Spread

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a report in March 2026 detailing the spread of the variant. As of early February 2026, the CDC had detected BA.3.2 in wastewater samples from 25 U.S. States. Specifically, the agency identified the variant in 132 wastewater samples, three airplane wastewater samples, clinical samples from five patients, and nasal swabs from four travelers.

Detection and Geographic Spread

Beyond the United States, the variant has been spotted in 23 countries. Experts suggest the virus may be more widespread than currently known because testing has been scaled back since the peak of the pandemic.

Impact on Pediatric Health

Early observations indicate that children may be significantly more susceptible to this strain. Some reports suggest that children could be up to five times more vulnerable to the BA.3.2 variant compared to previous strains of the virus.

Medical experts believe this shift in vulnerability may be driven by several factors:

  • Higher transmissibility of the BA.3.2 variant.
  • Weaker prior immunity in children.
  • Increased exposure within social settings and schools.
  • Potential changes in how the virus interacts with the immune systems of younger individuals.

Despite the increased risk of infection in children, scientists state that the variant is not causing more severe disease in children or adults. Symptoms in children are reported to be largely similar to earlier strains, although they may occur more intensely or frequently.

Vaccine Effectiveness and Viral Evolution

Current vaccines are still believed to provide some level of protection against the Cicada variant. However, because the variant is highly mutated, the CDC is evaluating its ability to partially bypass prior immunity from vaccination or previous infections.

Some experts warn that the variant could escape antibodies developed from previously administered vaccines, leading to recommendations for booster shots. Conversely, other scientists suggest the variant has not caused enough trouble to necessitate an immediate update to the vaccines.

Public Health Outlook

The World Health Organization, the ICMR, and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have stated that there is no immediate threat to public life. The CDC continues to monitor the variant’s transmissibility, clinical impact, and immune evasion capabilities.

To mitigate the spread of the variant, health experts suggest maintaining general health advisory practices, including:

  • Regular hand washing and maintaining general hygiene.
  • Wearing masks in public places.
  • Obtaining booster vaccinations.
