Prior to the pandemic, access to essential WASH services was already limited in many low- and middle-income countries. This pre-existing vulnerability was exacerbated by the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, highlighting systemic deficiencies in cleaning and disinfection protocols, particularly within healthcare facilities. During the pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnered with organizations and governments in ten countries – Belize, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) – to enhance WASH activities. These efforts focused on improving access to hand hygiene resources, promoting their use, and ensuring the environmental cleaning of shared toilets in healthcare facilities. Similar initiatives extended to community institutions like markets and schools, as well as households considered at higher risk for COVID-19 transmission.
The CDC’s work, detailed in a report published on , specifically targeted 114 healthcare facilities across six countries, 59 community institutions in Uganda and the DRC, and 405 households in Burkina Faso.
