COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign in Brabant-Zuidoost a Success: Lowering Barriers for Residents
Boost in accessibility: Local Health Officials Report Success in Fall COVID-19 Booster Campaign
Brabant-Zuidoost, MI – As the fall COVID-19 booster campaign winds down, local health officials are celebrating a triumphant effort to make vaccinations more accessible to vulnerable populations.
While only about 43% of those invited have received the booster shot, Joost van der Steen, program coordinator for the local health department, emphasizes that the focus this year was on accessibility rather than sheer numbers.
“For us, the most critically important thing is making sure everyone who wants the booster can get it,” Van der Steen said.
This year, the health department moved away from large, centralized vaccination sites, opting instead for smaller, more convenient locations spread throughout the region.”We wanted to lower the barrier for people,” Van der Steen explained.”Many in vulnerable groups prefer not to travel far, and they feel more comfortable getting vaccinated in a familiar habitat.”
The strategy included setting up 13 vaccination sites across Brabant-Zuidoost and offering in-home vaccinations for over 2,000 individuals. A mobile team also visited care facilities without on-site medical staff to ensure residents could receive their boosters.
“People have the right to decide whether or not they want the booster,” van der Steen acknowledged. “But it’s our obligation to make sure it’s as easy as possible for them to get it if they choose to.”
The campaign has seen the highest turnout among older adults, with interest waning slightly among younger seniors.
“We’re seeing a clear trend: the older people get, the more likely they are to get the booster,” Van der Steen noted. “That’s encouraging.”
The fall COVID-19 booster campaign concludes on Friday.Residents of Brabant-Zuidoost can still schedule an appointment by phone or walk into designated locations in Eindhoven, Eersel, and Budel without an appointment.
