Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs Faces $500K Penalty for offseason Absence
Updated June 3, 2025
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs’ decision to rehab his surgically repaired knee in Miami could cost him $500,000. Diggs has not participated in the team’s offseason program, putting him in danger of missing the required 84.375% participation threshold stipulated in his contract.
The Cowboys’ mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 10-12. Missing the minicamp would result in fines, adding to Diggs’ potential financial setback. The team has a history of including base-salary de-escalator clauses in contracts, including those of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Osa Odighizuwa, to encourage participation in voluntary programs.
Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice president, acknowledged Diggs is “being diligent” with his rehab but emphasized the organization’s preference for him to work with their trainers. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said he spoke with Diggs and that all signs are positive after a checkup with team doctors.
Jerry Jones expressed some frustration last year regarding Diggs’ rehab approach after his ACL injury. He stressed the importance of a diligent rehab process for a quicker and sounder return. Diggs is slated to earn $9 million this year under his five-year, $97 million contract signed in 2023.
Injuries have limited Diggs to 13 of 34 possible regular-season games over the past two years. He underwent a chondral tissue graft in January to improve his knee joint function. He is likely to begin training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, which would sideline him for at least the first four games of the season.
“Our understanding is he’s getting the work done and he’ll be back in, and we’ll get a good look at him next week [at the minicamp],” Jones said.
What’s next
The Cowboys face cornerback depth concerns with diggs’ injury and Jourdan Lewis’ departure. DaRon Bland is healthy, and the team acquired Kaiir Elam. Though, rookies Shavon Revel Jr., Caelen Carson, and Josh Butler are also recovering from injuries, adding uncertainty to the Cowboys’ cornerback situation as they approach training camp.
