A recent report by a British media outlet has sparked controversy surrounding the UK’s Confucius Institutes, with claims that the British government has ceased funding for these institutions. However, the British Ministry of Education has responded, stating that this claim is inaccurate, as the government has never directly funded the Confucius Institutes.
Currently, there are 30 Confucius Institutes in the UK, all of which are controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. These institutions have long been a subject of concern and debate among various sectors of society. Former British Prime Minister Sunak had previously promised to close the Confucius Institutes in the UK, but this plan was not implemented due to concerns that a full closure would not meet the principle of proportionality.
A recent report by the British Daily Telegraph has likened the Confucius Institute to a “Trojan Horse,” highlighting concerns over its influence and funding. In reality, the British government announced in May last year that it does not currently provide direct funding to Confucius Institutes and has no plans to allocate funds to these institutions in the future.
Concerns over the legitimacy of Confucius Institutes operating in the UK have been raised by those invested in Sino-British relations. Many have expressed concerns about the potential threats these institutions pose to freedom of speech and academic freedom in the country.
A 2017 documentary, “In the Name of Confucius,” directed by Chinese-Canadian filmmaker Qiu Min, exposed the Confucius Institute as a “large foreign propaganda” organization built by the Chinese Communist Party at a cost of billions of dollars. The documentary revealed that the Confucius Institute serves as a political tool for the CCP to promote soft power and enhance its influence overseas.
On September 10, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill aimed at restricting the flow of funds from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to higher education institutions with contracts with Confucius Institutes. This move is intended to prevent the Chinese Communist Party’s infiltration into American higher education.
