Cracking Down on Holiday Ticket Scams: Korail and SR Demand Action Against 42 Black Market Cases
Railway Operators Request Police Investigation into Ticket Blacklisting
Korea Railroad Corporation, Korail, and SRT operator SR have requested police investigations into suspected ticket blacklisting during the holiday period since 2020. According to data submitted by KORAIL and SR, 42 cases of suspected ticket black market trading have been detected.
KORAIL confirmed 25 cases of suspected ticket black market trading, while SR confirmed 17 cases. In one notable case, an individual purchased 311 tickets using 11 membership numbers with six credit cards and then sold them as gifts. Another case involved the purchase of 22 tickets with one membership number.
Korail and SR currently do not have the authority to directly sanction or impose fines on black market ticket transactions. Instead, they monitor online second-hand trading platforms and receive reports through their own reporting channels.
Rep. Yeom Tae-young emphasized the need to discuss improving the system that grants railway operators the authority to crack down on unfair ticket transactions. This move aims to prevent ticket blacklisting and ensure fair access to railway tickets for all passengers.
