International Symposium on Domestic and International Accountability Mechanisms for International Crimes
A high-level discussion on domestic and international accountability mechanisms for international crimes commenced on September 2, 2024, at the Waterfront Hotel du Labourdonnais in Port-Louis. The symposium aims to provide a platform for local and international experts to engage in discussions on international crime issues.
The three-day symposium, an initiative of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Wayamo Foundation, brings together renowned experts from academia, non-governmental organizations, prosecutors, and professionals from Nigeria, Canada, Kenya, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and the United States.
Commitment to Fighting International Crimes
Rashid Ahmine, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), emphasized that the symposium serves as a unique platform to discuss critical issues related to international crimes. He reiterated Mauritius’ commitment to combating international crimes, protecting citizens, and preserving human integrity.
“Crimes against humanity or acts of genocide are despicable and patently unnatural.”
Mr. Ahmine stressed the need to acknowledge the severity of these crimes and their far-reaching impact on people’s lives.
Strengthening the African Justice System
Bettina Ambach from the Wayamo Institute highlighted that the symposium focuses on the application of universal jurisdiction and modern forms of evidence at the national level. The primary objective is to strengthen the African justice system in terms of prosecuting and investigating international crimes.
