Three workers are in critical condition after a scaffolding structure approximately 40 meters high collapsed at a steel mill in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, on April 7, 2026.
The accident occurred at the JFE Steel East Japan Works in the Keihin District. According to police, the collapse happened while workers were in the process of dismantling a crane used for unloading cargo from ships at a construction site.
Emergency Response and Casualties
Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 4:30 p.m. On April 7, 2026. Authorities report that five people fell when the structure gave way.
Of those who fell, four individuals have been rescued. Three of the rescued workers were found unconscious and remain in critical condition. One person remains unaccounted for as search efforts continue.
Emergency responders, including swimmers, were deployed to the site to assist in the rescue operations at the Keihin District facility.
Investigation Status
Police and fire department officials are currently investigating the cause of the collapse. The incident involved the failure of a 40-meter structure during the specialized work of dismantling heavy machinery.
