Updated June 02, 2025
The crawley family is preparing for its final act. “Downton Abbey: The Grande Finale” is scheduled to premiere in theaters Sept. 12, concluding the saga that began on television in 2010.The film stars Simon Russell Beale, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, and paul Giamatti, among others.
Set in the early 1930s, the film promises a new decade and a clean slate for the beloved characters. The movie picks up after the events of “Downton Abbey: A New Era” (2022) and the original “Downton Abbey” film (2019).
The film’s tagline reads: “The place we’ll always remember. the family we’ll never forget. Everything has led to this.”
Notably, “The Grande Finale” will be the first film without Maggie Smith, whose character, Violet, passed away at the end of “A New Era.” Smith herself died in September 2024.
The cast also includes Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Alessandro Nivola, Dominic West, Penelope Wilton, Arty Froushan, Joely Richardson, Paul Copley, and Douglas Reith. Julian Fellowes, the franchise creator, penned the script, and Simon Curtis returns as director.
Joanne Froggatt reflected on the emotional experience of filming the final movie.”It’s the third and final movie, and we started filming the first season 15 years ago. So it was super emotional,” Froggatt said. “You don’t get to do that very frequently enough in this industry, and the fact that I’ve shared it with such a marvelous group of people will always be really special. It’ll always have a special place in my heart, and it’s been a special part of my life.”
Executive producer Gareth Neame said the film will honor Smith and her character. “The fact that Dame Maggie herself has now passed away since that time, I do think, has given a real added poignancy to a story that we would have planned anyway,” Neame said. “The loss of the Dowager,it now feels far more meaningful that you see actors playing characters mourning the family matriarch. But I also see actors mourning the matriarch of the show, and it feels more genuine and more meaningful.”
