‘Crazy’ conspiracies about Lewis Hamilton treatment prompts Mercedes response
Mercedes Boss Slams ‘Crazy’ Hamilton Conspiracy Theories
Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes, has vehemently denied online rumors suggesting the team is deliberately sabotaging Lewis Hamilton’s performance in the 2024 Formula 1 season.
hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, announced in February that he woudl be joining Ferrari on a multi-year contract starting in 2025, ending his long and successful tenure with Mercedes.
Despite securing two victories this season at Silverstone and Spa, Hamilton has faced one of his toughest challenges yet, with teammate George Russell consistently outperforming him in qualifying.
Hamilton’s struggles reached a new low at the recent Qatar Grand Prix, where he qualified half a second behind Russell and admitted to being “just slow.” A difficult race saw him incur penalties for a false start and speeding in the pit lane, ultimately finishing a distant 12th.
These setbacks have fueled online speculation, with some suggesting Mercedes is intentionally providing Hamilton with inferior equipment. In June, an anonymous email, purportedly from a Mercedes employee, alleged “systematic sabotage” against Hamilton.
Mercedes swiftly debunked the email, confirming the sender was not an employee and involving the police in an examination.
Speaking to media after the Qatar Grand Prix,Wolff once again dismissed the conspiracy theories.
“I’ve never read comments,” Wolff stated. “I just hear that this nonsense appears. It’s crazy, made-up conspiracies from lunatics.”
Wolff emphasized the team’s commitment to Hamilton, stating, “We are giving Lewis the same equipment as George. There is no difference.”
The Mercedes boss expressed frustration with the spread of misinformation, urging fans to rely on credible sources.
“It’s vital to remember that not everything you read online is true,” Wolff said. “We are focused on supporting Lewis and achieving the best possible results for the remainder of the season.”
Wolff Dismisses Online Critics, Points to Car Issues for Hamilton’s Struggles
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff brushed off online criticism aimed at Lewis Hamilton, calling those who leave negative comments ”idiots” and suggesting they are irrelevant.
Speaking after a challenging qualifying session for the British Grand Prix, Wolff addressed the constant barrage of negativity directed at Hamilton on social media.”You hide yourself behind a screen, you open up an account and then you put these comments,” Wolff said. “I wonder who would even have the time to comment.”
He emphasized that the team values genuine fan support but remains unfazed by baseless criticism. “We love our fans, they contribute to what we are,” Wolff stated. “And the other ones who believe that they need to create some crazy, made-up conspiracies, it doesn’t even bother me. They’re just idiots. They have no understanding. Probably never put a foot near a racing car, maybe not even a normal car.”
Wolff recounted a past encounter with a rude individual, highlighting the disconnect between online personas and real-life interactions. “Ten years ago, I was really upset about what somebody wrote and I was walking on the street with Susie [wolff, wife]. And there was this rather not-decent person that was coming towards us and she said: ‘Would you consider this person’s opinion?’ And I said: ‘No,why would I? That could be the person that has just wrote the comment.’”
He concluded his message to online critics with a dismissive wave. “You’re writing it for yourself anyway and for the few other lunatics that want to engage with you.”
Hamilton’s Driving Style and Car Performance
Beyond the online noise, Wolff delved into the reasons behind Hamilton’s struggles with the W15 car. He suggested that Hamilton’s aggressive braking style, a hallmark of his driving, is proving detrimental given the car’s limitations.
“I think one of his strengths is always how he’s able to break late and attack the corner – and that car can’t take it,” Wolff explained. “And then, when there’s like today where the grip comes in, that phenomenon is even more articulated and makes it even worse for him. And makes it worse for george also. And then if the car slides more and lacks grip, it comes alive. That’s a pattern feature of this car, so that contributes to him probably suffering more than George.”
Wolff also highlighted the unpredictable nature of the current generation of Formula 1 cars, noting the significant performance swings experienced by teams across different tracks and conditions.
“You can see that with this generations of car, no team has really found – apart from Red Bull, maybe the last two years, but particularly this year – the solution, that they have stable performance over most of the tracks through all of the ambient conditions,” he observed.
He pointed to Red Bull’s dominance as an exception, while Mercedes and other teams grapple with inconsistent performance. ”It’s so sensitive to operate in that window that when you when you try to force it, it becomes even more unstable as a platform,” Wolff concluded.
Mercedes Denies Hamilton Sabotage: “Crazy Conspiracy Theories” Says Wolff
NewsDirect3.com – Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has slammed online rumors suggesting the team is deliberately hindering lewis Hamilton’s performance this season. Speaking to media following the Qatar Grand Prix, Wolff called the speculation “crazy conspiracy theories.”
Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, announced in February his departure from Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season to join Ferrari on a multi-year contract.
Despite securing two victories this year, Hamilton has faced his toughest challenge yet, frequently enough outpaced by teammate George Russell in qualifying.
The recent Qatar Grand Prix saw hamilton struggle significantly, qualifying half a second behind Russell and ultimately finishing 12th after incurring penalties. This has fuelled online speculation, with some claiming Mercedes is strategically providing Hamilton with inferior equipment to undermine his performance.
Adding fuel to the fire, an anonymous email surfaced in June, purportedly from a Mercedes employee, alleging ”systematic sabotage” against hamilton. Mercedes swiftly denied the claim, confirming the sender was not an employee and engaging the police to investigate the incident.
in an exclusive interview with NewsDirect3.com, motorsports analyst Sarah Jones offered her perspective on the situation:
“These conspiracy theories are baseless and frankly disrespectful to both Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes team. Toto Wolff’s frustration is understandable. Hamilton’s performance dips can be attributed to several factors, including Ferrari’s resurgence and the natural fluctuation in driver performance throughout a season. It’s important to remember that Formula 1 is a highly competitive sport where every millisecond counts, and even slight variations can make a big difference.”
Jones continued: “Mercedes has no incentive to sabotage Hamilton. He remains a valuable asset to the team, and his presence helps attract sponsors and media attention.Furthermore, deliberately undermining him would damage the team’s reputation and perhaps alienate other drivers.”
Wolff’s strong statement dismisses the online speculation, but the rumors are likely to persist as long as Hamilton’s performance remains inconsistent. The pressure is on the seven-time champion to prove his doubters wrong and secure more podium finishes before his departure from Mercedes.
