Creating a Culture of Connection: Addressing Loneliness in Rural Health Care

Addressing Loneliness in Healthcare Workers

Healthcare professionals care deeply for others, but they often neglect their own needs. Many find it hard to seek help, especially in rural areas where resources are scarce. Health insurance may require them to consult colleagues they see daily, adding to the challenge.

As a leader managing 14 rural facilities across six states, I see this struggle firsthand. Many team members care for aging parents and children while dealing with their own mental health issues. Despite working closely together, many feel isolated.

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated that loneliness affects around 50% of adults in the U.S. This statistic is alarming. Supervising 6,000 employees means potentially 3,000 are feeling alone. I realized I must foster connections among staff.

In March 2024, we held a panel discussion for Women’s History Month to talk about life’s challenges. We expected a small turnout but over 200 people joined. Sharing our personal stories created a safe space for others to open up. Feedback included statements like:

  • “Thank you for sharing your journey.”
  • “Your honesty gives hope.”
  • “Those who seem happy may be the saddest inside.”

We now hold monthly 30-minute sessions focusing on different topics suggested by participants. These gatherings allow staff to express their needs and connect with others.

To ensure these sessions succeed, we focus on three key points:

  1. Leadership Vulnerability: High-level leaders should share their own struggles. This openness demonstrates that everyone faces challenges.

  2. Clear Purpose: Keep meetings short and focused to respect everyone’s time. When staff see value, they are more likely to attend.

  3. Participation and Adaptation: Encourage staff to suggest topics and start small groups. Empower those passionate about connection to take the lead.

Connection is essential in our healthcare facilities. By helping staff feel seen, we can work toward our goal: preventing suicides in the healthcare workforce. Creating an environment where everyone feels valued and cared for is vital for fostering resilience among team members.
