A total of 161 employees classified as risk-takers
at French mutual banks BPCE, Crédit Agricole, and Crédit Mutuel earned more than one million euros in 2025, according to data reported by the specialized daily L’Agefi.
While these mutual banks maintain a lower number of million-euro earners compared to traditional large banking institutions, the figures reveal a significant concentration of high compensation within their investment banking arms.
BPCE led the mutual group with 87 bankers earning over one million euros in 2025, representing a 43% increase over one year. A substantial portion of these high salaries is concentrated at Natixis, which accounted for more than half of the 530 million euros distributed to BPCE risk-takers during the year.
Crédit Agricole recorded 63 employees with earnings exceeding one million euros in 2025, up from 59 in 2024. Within this group, Crédit Agricole CIB, the group’s investment bank, represents 84% of the millionaires.
Crédit Agricole SA distributed a total of 506.9 million euros to its risk-takers, with 344 million euros allocated to investment banking teams. The majority of these employees earned between one and two million euros. Specifically, four individuals received between 2 million and 2.5 million euros, while one person earned more than 2.5 million euros.
In contrast, Crédit Mutuel showed more restraint in its top-tier payouts, with no risk-taker earning more than two million euros in 2025.
The compensation levels at mutual banks remain significantly lower than those at France’s largest traditional banks. For comparison, BNP Paribas alone had 476 bankers earning over one million euros, with 1.3 billion euros paid out to its risk-taker category. Société Générale reported 184 millionaire bankers and distributed 541 million euros to its risk-takers.
This data aligns with a broader trend in the French financial sector, as the total number of millionaire bankers in France doubled between 2019 and 2024.
