Creeslough Blast: Relatives Launch Civil Cases
Creeslough Explosion: Lawsuits Mount as Families Seek Answers and Justice
Table of Contents
Dozens of lawsuits have been filed in the wake of the devastating Creeslough explosion, with bereaved families and survivors seeking accountability and clarity following the tragedy that claimed ten lives.
The legal actions target multiple individuals and entities, including the Register of Gas Installers Ireland, which is currently in liquidation, necessitating High Court permission for the latest cases to proceed. Among those initiating legal proceedings are Donna and hugh Harper, who lost their 14-year-old daughter Leona, and Amanda Faul, Marie Ronaghan, and Kathryn McDevitt, sisters of Martina Russell, another victim of the blast.
Mr. Tansey confirmed that some lawsuits also include claims from apartment owners concerned about whether their insurance will cover the full value of their destroyed properties.
Ongoing Investigation and Calls for Public Inquiry
The explosion, which occurred on October 7, 2022, is suspected to have been caused by a sudden gas leak, though a Garda investigation is still ongoing. The probe, supported by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Health & Safety Authority, and the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities, has seen five individuals questioned, with one man in his 60s arrested and subsequently released without charge in May.
Despite the ongoing investigation, several bereaved family members and survivors have expressed frustration and a persistent lack of information regarding the circumstances that led to the loss of their loved ones. They have been vocal in their calls for a public inquiry to shed light on the tragedy. These calls have garnered support from Donegal County Council, which passed a motion last year advocating for the establishment of such an inquiry.
Controversial Service Station Plan Overturned
Adding to the community’s distress, a decision by Donegal County Council to grant permission for Vivo/Shell Limited to erect a service station at the site of the explosion was overturned last month. The proposed development, which included a shop, post office, beauty salon, fuel pumps, and memorial features such as a sculpture and memorial garden, had caused considerable upset among the victims’ families.
The appeals board,An Coimisiún Pleanála,ultimately ruled against the development, citing that it would be out of character with its surroundings and would seriously detract from the architectural character and setting of Creeslough.
