The fire erupted around 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2024, in a residential building located on Al-Shafra Street in Crevillent, Alicante province, Spain. The building, three stories high, caught fire on the second floor. Firefighters from Crevillent, elche, Almoradí, and Elda responded to the scene.
Firefighters rescued six individuals: four from the building’s façade and two from inside, including the deceased and the critically injured man. Approximately 60 residents were evacuated from the affected building and a neighboring structure as a precautionary measure.The fire was declared extinguished around 1:21 a.m. on Tuesday, january 30, 2024.
Victims and Injuries
A 25-year-old woman was resuscitated twice by paramedics at the scene but ultimately succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The Emergency Facts and Coordination Center (CICU) confirmed her death. A 33-year-old man was evacuated to Elche Hospital with a reserved prognosis,meaning his condition is critical and his outcome uncertain. Levante-EMV reported on the victim’s passing.
Investigation and Arrest
The Civil Guard has arrested a man suspected of involvement in the fire. The Santa Pola Judicial Police team is leading the investigation to determine the exact circumstances and motive behind the blaze. Firefighting Response
The Provincial Firefighters Consortium deployed meaningful resources to combat the fire. The response included two command units,a heavy rural bomb,a heavy mother bomb (a type of high-capacity water delivery system),a light urban pump,an aerial ladder,and a transport van. A team of ten firefighters, along with a sergeant and three corporals, from the Crevillent, Elche, Almoradí, and Elda fire stations worked to extinguish the flames.
