Broadway Celebrates: Snook Wins, “Sunset Blvd” Triumphs at 2025 Tony Awards

The 78th annual Tony Awards celebrated the best of Broadway, with “Succession” star Sarah Snook taking home her first tony Award for her performance in “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” Snook played 26 roles in her Broadway debut.
“It is billed as a one person show, and I don’t feel alone any night that I do this show,” Snook said, acknowledging her production’s creative team.
Nicole Scherzinger won Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Norma Desmond in ”Sunset Blvd,” which also garnered the Best Revival of a Musical award. Darren Criss won his first Tony Award for “maybe Happy Endings,” which was also named Best Musical. “Purpose” secured Best Play, while “Eureka Day” took Best revival of a Play. Cole Escola won Best Actor in a play for their celebrated performance as Mary Todd Lincoln. Jak Malone (“Operation mincemeat”), Natalie Venetia Belcon (“Buena Vista Social Club”), Francis Jue (“Yellow Face”), and Kara Young (“Purpose”) also took home acting prizes.
Several nominated shows, including “Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Real Women Have Curls,” and “Death Becomes Her,” are based on popular films. The “Death Becomes Her” cast paid tribute to Pride month with their performance of “For the Gaze.”
Michael Arden, winner for Best Direction of a Musical, delivered a powerful speech.
“Growing up, I was called the F-word more times than I can remember, and now I’m a f*ggot with a Tony,” Arden said. “So, keep raising your voices, my friends. Keep loving and uplifting each other, standing up against intolerance any time you see it. And vote every chance you get.”
The original cast of “Hamilton,” including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Renée Elise goldsberry, Ariana DeBose, and Jonathan Groff, reunited for a 10th-anniversary medley that electrified the audience.
Scherzinger,in her acceptance speech,expressed gratitude for feeling accepted by the Broadway community.
Harvey Fierstein received an Honorary Tony Award. Ben Stiller,Lea Salonga,Jean Smart,samuel L. Jackson, latanya Richardson Jackson, and Sarah Paulson were among the presenters.
