Television presenter Cristián Sánchez has shared a deeply personal account regarding the lifelong challenges faced by his mother, Rosa Barceló, following a severe childhood accident. The animator used his platform during a televised solidarity marathon to highlight the critical importance of rehabilitation services and the lasting impact of physical limitations.

During the overnight broadcast of the Teletón on November 5, 2022, Sánchez addressed the audience at a moment when donation figures were unexpectedly low. The 50-year-old presenter sought to incentivize viewers to contribute by recounting the trauma his mother experienced as a young child.

A Childhood Tragedy and Lasting Impact

Sánchez revealed that Rosa Barceló was only six years old when she was involved in a brutal automobile accident. The crash resulted in significant physical complications, including hemiplegia, which permanently affected her mobility and left her with lasting limitations.

The presenter reflected on the timing of the accident, noting that the specialized care and rehabilitation provided by the Teletón did not exist when his mother was a child. He expressed a strong belief that her life would have been significantly easier and better had such an institution been available at that time.

My mom had an accident at six years old, a car accident where she was left with many physical complications. So when I see this I say ‘how much I would have given for the Teletón to exist at that moment,’ because surely her life would have been much better.

While Sánchez emphasized that his mother has been very happy due to her wonderful resilience, he maintained that the ability to access professional rehabilitation would have removed many of the hardships associated with her condition.

Advocating for Rehabilitation Services

The animator’s testimony served as a call to action for the public to support the Teletón, which provides care for thousands of families. He noted that there are 32,000 families currently receiving treatment through the organization, with many more expected to seek help in the future.

Sánchez urged the public not to let the institution fail, arguing that the existence of the Teletón means that current patients should not be deprived of care due to a lack of public effort or indifference.

To those people, knowing that we already have the Teletón, we cannot fail them, we cannot arrive and say ‘ah, no, it’s just that today I felt lazy to go, I didn’t get up or I didn’t make the transfer’. The Teletón helps, it’s wonderful, it changes lives, so everything serves.

Despite acknowledging that his mother might be upset with him for sharing such private details publicly, Sánchez felt it was necessary to use the story to emphasize how the organization changes lives and improves the quality of living for those with physical disabilities.

The account has since been highlighted across various media outlets, including BioBioChile and ADN Radio, as a moving example of the intersection between personal tragedy and the necessity of public health infrastructure for rehabilitation.
