From Sevilla to South Florida: Cristina Valladares Builds Community Through Tennis
Cristina Valladares, a Spanish-born tennis professional, has dedicated her career to expanding access to the sport and fostering community in Miami-Dade County. Originally from Sevilla, Spain, Valladares began playing tennis at the age of four, quickly rising through the ranks of Spain’s competitive junior tennis system.
Between the ages of 14 and 16, Valladares ranked among the top players in Spain, gaining valuable experience in professional-level competition. In 2009, she moved to the United States to pursue both collegiate tennis and higher education. She competed for multiple collegiate programs, ultimately completing her career at Barry University in Miami. While at Barry, she was a key member of a Division II National Championship team and earned a degree in Finance and Business Administration.
Following her graduation, Valladares founded Neighborhood Tennis in 2013, a Miami-based organization with a clear mission: to introduce tennis to a wider audience and share a passion for the sport. According to the Neighborhood Tennis website, the organization aims to inspire players and teach them to appreciate the game through fun, recreational competitions. The program emphasizes both the individual aspects of tennis and the importance of teamwork and collaboration, fostering a strong sense of community.
Today, Valladares serves as Director of Neighborhood Tennis, overseeing a growing number of junior and adult programs throughout Miami-Dade County. She leads a team of coaches dedicated to her vision of building inclusive communities through sport. A recent connection on LinkedIn, as noted in Tennis Club Business magazine, highlighted her success and the impact of her work in the Coral Gables area, where Neighborhood Tennis operates a six-court facility at the Coral Gables Athletic Club.
Valladares’s approach has proven remarkably effective. Tennis Club Business reported an impressive 80% retention rate for both junior and adult participants. A key element of this success is the accessibility of the programs, with a large number of daily drop-in classes offered Monday through Friday, eliminating the need for pre-registration.
Valladares’s journey reflects a successful integration into American life after immigrating from Spain. She has not only built a thriving tennis organization but also established herself as a leader in the Miami community. Her work with Neighborhood Tennis demonstrates a commitment to making tennis accessible to all, regardless of background or experience.
Neighborhood Tennis is located at 1007 Granada Blvd, Coral Gables, FL 33134, and can be reached at (786) 483-7626. Their website is http://www.ntcoralgables.com.
