Mosnang Residents Debate Costly Sidewalk Project
MOSNANG, Switzerland (AP) — A proposed CHF 1.6 million loan to renovate Sonnhaldenstrasse, including the addition of a sidewalk from Sonnhalden to the Schrinersberg bus stop, is drawing criticism in mosnang. Some residents argue the project is unnecessary, prompting a response from Mayor Renato Truniger.

In a letter to the editor published Wednesday, three local farmers described the project as a “luxury project.” The loan for the Sonnhaldenstrasse renovation is scheduled for a vote on May 18.
The project focuses on the road section connecting the Sonnhalden district to Kantonsstrasse at the Schrinersberg bus stop. According to the municipality, the asphalt has reached the end of its lifespan, and the road drainage system requires upgrades.
Sidewalk Already Exists Near Medical Center
Currently, the road is 4.8 meters wide and lacks a sidewalk. The municipality aims to improve public transport access by adding a sidewalk and widening the road to 5.25 meters, allowing vehicles to pass at 50 kilometers per hour.Critics, including the letter writers, point out that the sidewalk’s construction would encroach on agricultural land.
Their primary contention stems from the imminent opening of a new bus stop near the medical center.Given the existing illuminated sidewalk in that direction, they argue that extending the sidewalk to the Schrinersberg stop is redundant.
Vreni Truniger, whose husband and son co-authored the letter, stated, “In our view, simply renovating the Sonnhaldenstrasse is sufficient.” She added that drivers exercise caution, especially concerning pedestrians. Vreni Truniger clarified she is not related to Mayor Renato Truniger.
Mayor Defends Project, Cites Safety Concerns
Mayor Truniger confirmed the planned relocation of the Grütli bus stop to the medical center.”The approval process is progressing well,” he said. He noted this would improve public transport connections for many hamlet residents. Though, he acknowledged that the route to the medical center stop involves stairs, making it less accessible than the Schrinersberg stop.
