Merz Faces Criticism Over Asylum, Migration Policies

Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government declaration drew sharp criticism, with teh Green Party adn the Alternative for Germany (AfD) voicing strong objections to his proposed policies on asylum and migration.
Green Party Leader Accuses Merz of divisive Rhetoric
Katharina Dröge, leader of the Green Party, initially expressed a desire for the new government to succeed, stating that the country “deserves it.” However, she quickly followed with a barrage of criticisms aimed at Merz’s past actions and future policy directions.
Dröge accused merz of implementing policies that ”left burned earth” and basing his election campaign on misleading statements.She also pointed to instances where the Union faction coordinated with the AfD on migration issues.

According to Dröge, Merz has a history of polarizing the public, notably targeting “social minorities, unemployed people, people with migration history, and refugees.”
Addressing the Chancellor directly, Dröge stated, “I expect them to be chancellor of all people in this country.” She emphasized the importance of Merz building bridges and representing the interests of the moast vulnerable, adding, “A Federal Chancellor in particular has to be there for everyone, especially for the weakest in this country. And we will measure them on that.”
Concerns Over European Asylum Policy Cooperation
Dröge specifically criticized Merz’s approach to European cooperation on asylum policy, citing concerns over stricter border controls and the rejection of asylum seekers. She argued that these measures effectively represent “the termination of European cooperation in asylum policy,” leading to a situation where “Germany makes his and the others can see where they stay.”
