Crocodile Tears: Why Unlikely People Cry

New research reveals that the perceived sincerity of tears is not universal, but rather heavily influenced by who is crying and the context in which it occurs.
Warsaw, Poland & Silkeborg, Denmark – Tears, frequently enough seen as a powerful expression of emotion, are not always perceived as a universally sincere social signal. A recent study published in PLOS One by researchers from Poland and Denmark delves into the complex factors that shape our perception of tearfulness as genuine, suggesting that context, individual characteristics, and societal expectations play a crucial role.
tears and Perceived Honesty: A Nuanced Relationship
The study, titled “The honesty behind tears: Situational, individual, and cultural influences on the perception of emotional tears as sincere,” found that the impact of tears on perceived honesty is far from straightforward. While tears can indeed enhance perceptions of sincerity, this effect is not uniform across all individuals or situations.
When Tears Speak Louder: Unexpected Criers
one of the most significant findings highlights that tears might potentially be perceived as more honest, and perhaps more beneficial in eliciting support, when shed by individuals who are less typically expected to cry.
Gender and Warmth: The research indicated that tears tended to increase perceptions of honesty more strongly for female photo subjects with lower warmth ratings and for men, who are generally perceived as less warm. This suggests that when individuals who are not typically associated with frequent emotional displays shed tears, observers may infer a more genuine and compelling reason for their distress.
The Element of Surprise: The authors propose that this phenomenon might be linked to surprise. When men or individuals perceived as less warm cry, it deviates from common expectations. This unexpectedness can lead observers to assume a more profound and authentic emotional experience, thus boosting the perceived sincerity of their tears.
Context is Key: Situational Influences
Beyond individual characteristics, the context in which tears are shed significantly influences their interpretation.
Non-Manipulative Situations: Tears were perceived as more honest in the context of non-manipulative situations. This implies that if tears are perceived as a genuine response to circumstances rather than an attempt to deceive or manipulate, they are more likely to be viewed as sincere.
The Need for Ecological Validity: The researchers acknowledge a significant challenge in studying the social effects of tears: the difficulty in choosing appropriate stimuli. While their studies utilized images with digitally added tears, they note that crying is a complex behavior involving more than just tears, encompassing gestures, vocalizations, and facial muscle movements. Future research aims to employ more ecologically valid manipulations to capture the full spectrum of emotional expression.
Future Directions and Broader Implications
The findings underscore the importance of context in understanding the social signaling power of tears. Multiple factors contribute to this contextual interpretation, and further research is needed to fully disentangle these influences and their precise effects.
The authors conclude,”Our studies showed that tears are not universally seen as a sincere social signal, because their perceived genuineness depends on who is crying and in what situation.” This nuanced outlook challenges simplistic interpretations of crying and highlights the intricate ways in which social cues are processed and understood.
