Investigation Process
After the 2024 CrossFit Games in August, CrossFit hired a third-party investigation team to look into Lazar’s death on August 8, 2024, during Individual Event 1 (run/swim). The team gathered witness accounts and evidence to help improve athlete safety at future events. We appreciate your patience during this process.
While we cannot release the full investigation report due to privacy and legal matters, the findings have been shared with our Board of Directors. Our current focus is on enhancing safety protocols for the CrossFit Games.
CrossFit’s Actions and Next Steps
We are implementing the following changes to improve safety standards at the CrossFit Games:
1. New Leadership Role for Safety
CrossFit will create a senior leadership role dedicated to safety at the CrossFit Games. This role will centralize safety protocols, manage emergency action plans, oversee pre-event rehearsals, and coordinate with safety experts and staff. This leader will also address safety concerns raised by athletes and staff. We will begin the search for this role immediately and aim to fill it before the next season.
2. Establishment of a Safety Advisory Board
We will form a Safety Advisory Board with members from diverse backgrounds, including emergency responders and former athletes, to provide comprehensive perspectives on safety. More details on board members will be shared by the end of this year.
3. Suspension of Open-Water Swimming Events
Open-water swimming events remain suspended. Future swimming components will be held in controlled environments, such as pools, where safety teams can closely monitor athletes.
4. Enhancing Pre-Event Rehearsals and Emergency Resources
Starting with the 2025 CrossFit Games, we will conduct additional on-site rehearsals for all event staff and safety personnel. Paramedic teams and ambulances will be available at all events, even if not required by local regulations.
5. Expanding Mental Health Support
We recognize that athlete well-being includes mental health. For the 2025 season, we will have mental health professionals on-site to assist those in distress, whether due to competition pressure or personal issues.
6. Creation of a CrossFit Athlete Council
We will establish an Athlete Council, elected by athletes, to ensure their feedback informs our protocols and policies. Details on the council will be shared soon, and we aim to have members chosen by early 2025.
In Closing
These changes reflect our commitment to safety. We believe these adjustments will enhance our response to emergencies and create a safer environment for all involved. We look forward to the 2025 season and will share important details soon.
