CRT TVs: Why You Should Buy Them Now
The Obsessive Quest for CRT Greatness: Why We still Crave the Glow
Table of Contents
It all sounds like alphabet soup, doesn’t it? RGB, PVM, SCART, component – the world of vintage display technology can be a bewildering maze for the uninitiated. But for a dedicated few, this jargon represents the pinnacle of visual fidelity, a quest for a specific kind of picture quality that modern screens simply can’t replicate.
The Allure of the Analog glow
We are now at least a decade past the end of CRT manufacture, with recycled CRTs ending in 2015 and the manufacture of new CRT tubes half a decade before that.Big-name commercial CRT TVs ended in the latter half of the 2000s, as peopel rapidly moved to flatscreens. Simply put-CRTs are onyl getting fewer in number, and one day in the (relatively) near future they will all stop working. This means there’s only a small window of time for you to enjoy the unique benefits and pleasures this older display technology offers.
This is why, at least once a week, I spend some time trawling online listings, hoping that I’ll stumble across some unicorn CRT TV that still has a good few years of life left in it for me to enjoy. Maybe I’ll find that widescreen HD CRT that’s been under a tarp in someone’s garage for years now, and maybe they’ll sell it to me for almost nothing-a man can dream!
If you’re venturing into the world of professional monitors, frequently enough referred to as PVMs, you need to tread very carefully. Just be very careful and do some research if you’re thinking about buying a PVM. Not all of them have an RGB input that’s going to work with commercial hardware like games consoles. I almost bought two Sony PVMs,until I found out that they only work with a proprietary RGB format that’s useless with anything I coudl connect to it.
this is a crucial point for anyone looking to connect modern gaming consoles or retro hardware to these specialized displays. Understanding the specific input standards is paramount to avoid disappointment.
Why the Obsession? The Undeniable Benefits of CRTs
So, what’s the big deal? Why are people still hunting for these bulky, power-hungry relics?
Zero Input Lag: For gamers, especially those playing fast-paced titles, input lag is the enemy. CRTs, by their very nature, have virtually no input lag, offering a direct, responsive connection between your actions and what you see on screen.
Perfect Pixel Structure: Unlike modern displays that use sub-pixel arrangements that can lead to color fringing or shimmering,CRTs display each pixel as a distinct dot. This results in incredibly sharp and clean image reproduction, particularly for pixel art and retro games.
Infinite Contrast and True Blacks: CRTs produce light by exciting phosphors on the screen. This means they can achieve perfect black levels because the pixels are literally off, leading to an unparalleled contrast ratio and a depth of image that’s hard to match.
Motion Handling: The way CRTs display motion is unique. They have a very fast pixel response time and a natural motion blur that many find more pleasing and less jarring than the interpolated motion found on many modern displays.
The Hunt for the Holy Grail
The search for the perfect CRT is a journey filled with both excitement and potential pitfalls. It’s about more than just nostalgia; it’s about appreciating a display technology that, in many ways, was never truly surpassed for certain applications.
As these splendid machines continue to age, their numbers dwindle. Each working CRT represents a piece of technological history, a gateway to an authentic visual experience that’s becoming increasingly rare. The quest continues, fueled by the desire to preserve and enjoy the unparalleled analog glow of CRT greatness.
