Atlas Ocean Voyages’ World Voyager docked in Dublin Port on October 5, 2026, concluding its ten-night cruise from Reykjavik and marking the official close of Dublin’s 2026 cruise ship season, rte.ie reported.

Global Fleet Expansion And Passenger Surges

Worldwide cruise passenger volumes reached 37.2 million last year on ocean-going vessels, representing a more than 25 percent increase compared to pre-pandemic numbers in 2019, according to data from the Cruise Lines International Association. This expansion is powered by a growing global fleet that totaled 327 cruise liners this year, which is 17 more vessels than in 2025 and roughly 57 more than in 2019. Industry capacity measured by lower berths reached just over 690,000 this year, marking a 6 percent single-year increase and a 28 percent jump over 2019 levels. The CLIA forecasts passenger volumes to exceed 38 million this year and surpass 42 million by the end of the decade.

Economic Impact Across Dublin And Cork Ports

Regional ports continue to capture significant local revenue from the seasonal influx of vessels and travelers. The Port of Cork expects three incoming cruise liners to conclude its own operational season, highlighting an economic contribution estimated at more than €17 million from regular ship arrivals and thousands of passengers. Meanwhile, the global market remains heavily concentrated among a handful of major operators. Carnival Corporation reported $26.6 billion in revenues last year, Royal Caribbean generated close to $18 billion, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings posted revenues north of $9.8 billion.

Corporate Profits Versus Land-Based Hospitality

Cruise operators convert these massive revenues into exceptional net profits compared to traditional land-based hotel groups. Last year, Carnival recorded a net profit of $4.5 billion, Royal Caribbean earned $4.3 billion, and Norwegian posted $423 million. By comparison, Marriott International operated more than 1.7 million rooms globally last year—double the capacity of the entire cruise industry—with revenues of $26.2 billion and a net profit of $2.6 billion.

Flags Of Convenience And Labor Cost Management

Entry-level starting positions on certain ships pay the equivalent of $1 to $2 an hour, with crew members frequently expected to work 10 to 12 hours a day, seven days a week, across contracts lasting 10 to 34 weeks.
