Crunchyroll Eyes Box Office Domination After Annecy Anime Showcase
Crunchyroll,the anime streaming service boasting over 17 million subscribers,is solidifying its position as a major player in global entertainment. Showcasing its strategy at Annecy, the company highlighted anime’s explosive growth and its role in fueling that expansion.
Michel Berger, Crunchyroll’s EVP of global commerce and head of theatrical, emphasized anime’s shift from niche to mainstream.He noted the medium’s unique ability to connect with audiences through dynamic characters, stunning visuals, and immersive worlds.

Crunchyroll’s study, surveying nearly 29,000 individuals aged 13-54 across seven global markets, revealed anime’s increasing cultural significance and emotional resonance with younger demographics.The study indicated that 54% of Gen Z express thier affinity for anime, placing it alongside major figures like Beyoncé and LeBron James.
Berger added that social media platforms are key to anime discovery, with 82% of fans engaging in social discussions about anime. Short clips and reels serve as primary entry points for Gen Z.
“Anime isn’t just something our audience watches; it’s something they feel,” Berger said.
Crunchyroll is expanding its offerings beyond streaming, venturing into games, music, collectibles, events, and theatrical releases. The company aims to provide subscribers with a more immersive experience.
