Crushing Defeat: India’s Darkest Day at Home as New Zealand Inflicts Historic Whitewash in Mumbai Test Series
New Zealand Creates History with 3-0 Test Series Win Against India
New Zealand made history by becoming the first team to defeat India 3-0 in a three-match Test series on Indian soil. India suffered a humiliating defeat in the third and final test in Mumbai, losing by 25 runs.
India had previously won 18 Test series at home since their 2-1 series loss against England in December 2012. However, New Zealand dealt a heavy blow to India with their impressive performance.
The most disappointing defeat in the history of Indian Test cricket took place at the Wankhede Stadium, the venue that lifted the ODI World Cup 13 years ago.
Historic Victory for New Zealand
“This is New Zealand’s best Test match performance in the history of our game,” former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doole told broadcasters.
Before traveling to New Zealand in October, India had not lost a Test series at home since 2012. It is also notable that India failed to win a single Test in a home series of more than two Tests for the first time.
Ajaz Patel’s Heroics
The third day saw New Zealand leap into the script of history with Ajaz Patel’s heroics. India lost all 3 matches in a Test series at home for the first time. Ajaz Patel shone with 11 wickets in the Mumbai Test.
Rishabh Pant’s 64 runs were wasted in the second innings. It was only the second time in their history that New Zealand defended a total below 150. Ravindra Jadeja’s 10-wicket haul was also wasted.
Concerns for India
The warning signs need to be taken seriously as India could miss out on a place in the World Test Championship final for the first time since the format was introduced in 2019. With their confidence and pride shattered, India are set to face a tough task as they tour Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Chasing 147 to keep their pride alive in the third and final test, India suffered a setback after Ravindra Jadeja took five wickets.
