Yang Jiamin’s Disappointing Loss in the 2024 Hong Kong Badminton Open
Yang Jiamin, my country’s top badminton player, suffered a crushing defeat on Thursday, September 12, losing 0-2 to Thai player Busanlan in the women’s singles round of 16 at the 2024 Hong Kong Badminton Open. Yang Jiamin’s performance was marred by numerous mistakes, ultimately leading to her elimination from the tournament.
Following the match, Yang Jiamin expressed her disappointment, stating, “I didn’t perform at my usual level in this game. I made too many mistakes, couldn’t control the ball, and missed the ball that I should have scored.” Her frustration was palpable as she reflected on the game.
Yang Jiamin and Busanlan had previously met four times, with each player winning two games. Yang Jiamin’s victories came in the 2019 Asian Championships and the 2023 Kumamoto Masters, while Busanlan won the 2021 Hero Open final and the 2021 Year-End Finals group stage. However, Busanlan’s recent form, including a runner-up finish in the women’s singles at the Japan Open, made her a formidable opponent.
Despite her preparations, Yang Jiamin found herself struggling to keep up with Busanlan’s pace. In the first game, Yang Jiamin quickly fell behind 3-11 but managed to tie the score at 11. Unfortunately, she lost her momentum and ultimately lost the first game 15-21. The second game saw Yang Jiamin continue to struggle, with unforced errors plaguing her performance and leading to a 12-21 defeat.
Yang Jiamin attributed her poor performance to an unexplained lack of form, stating, “I played with a normal mentality, but I don’t know why I was not in good shape.” Her disappointment was evident as she reflected on the match.
In other news, the second round of men’s and women’s singles saw seeded players advancing one after another. However, Indonesia’s Masrika, the fourth seed in women’s singles, was eliminated by Thailand’s star Ratchanok, losing 1-2.
