Denver-based Crusoe Energy, a leading data center operator, has secured a massive $600 million investment to fuel its ambitious expansion plans. The funding round, led by prominent venture capital firm Founders Fund, will enable Crusoe to build a network of state-of-the-art data centers designed to meet the surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) computing power.
“The ambition is to build gigawatts of AI infrastructure over time,” said Cully Cavness, Crusoe’s co-founder and President.
This meaningful investment comes at a time when the AI industry is experiencing explosive growth, pushing existing data center capacity to its limits.

Crusoe’s unique approach sets it apart from customary data center providers. The company handles every aspect of development, from securing renewable energy sources to deploying cutting-edge servers. This integrated model allows Crusoe to build data centers in locations with abundant renewable energy, addressing concerns about the environmental impact of AI’s growing energy demands.
“Most pre-existing data centers don’t have the capacity to handle artificial intelligence computing, causing record low vacancy,” Cavness explained.
Crusoe’s strategy is already paying off. In October, the company announced a $3.4 billion joint venture with Blue Owl Capital and Primary Digital to build a massive data center in Abilene, Texas. While Crusoe declined to disclose the tenant, reports suggest that tech giant Oracle will lease the facility and sublease it to OpenAI,the creator of the popular ChatGPT chatbot.
This latest funding round positions Crusoe as a key player in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, poised to meet the growing need for powerful and sustainable data infrastructure.
Texas wind Farms to Power Massive new Data Center, Crusoe Raises $600 Million for AI Expansion
Denver-based Crusoe Energy is building one of the world’s largest data centers in texas, powered entirely by wind energy. The move comes as the company pivots from its roots in cryptocurrency mining to capitalize on the booming artificial intelligence (AI) market.
Crusoe recently secured $600 million in funding, bringing its total raised to $1.5 billion. This latest round will fuel the construction of the Texas facility, which is expected to open in the first half of 2025.
“We start with energy first, finding locations where we can bring large amounts of low-cost power to bear quickly, than build out the data center and deploy servers,” said Cully Cavness, Crusoe’s co-founder.
The Texas center will boast a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, enough to power 1.2 million homes. Cavness emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, noting that the facility will utilize wind turbines to minimize wasted power in a region known for its strong winds.
This isn’t Crusoe’s first foray into renewable energy-powered data centers. The company already operates a facility in Iceland, which runs on geothermal and hydropower. Crusoe also has plans for additional data centers in the northeast, Colorado, and Canada, with a total of 15 gigawatts of capacity in the pipeline.
crusoe Cloud: Democratizing AI Access
Alongside the new data center, Crusoe is launching Crusoe Cloud, a service that allows businesses to run AI workloads on its servers. The company charges a per-hour computing price, tailored to the duration and power requirements of each project.
Cavness believes Crusoe Cloud will democratize access to AI, making it more affordable for smaller companies and startups.
“Historically you’ve had to be a big company with a lot of money to get into that market,” he said.
From Bitcoin Mining to AI Powerhouse
Crusoe was founded in 2018 by Cavness and Chase Lochmiller, who previously worked in the energy and tech sectors, respectively. The company initially focused on capturing excess natural gas from oil fields to power cryptocurrency mining operations.
However, the rise of ChatGPT in 2022 prompted Crusoe to shift its focus to AI. The company saw an opportunity to leverage its expertise in energy-efficient computing to support the growing demand for AI processing power.
With its new funding and ambitious expansion plans, Crusoe is poised to become a major player in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
Colorado Startup Crusoe Energy Quietly Becomes AI Powerhouse
arvada, CO – While the world fixates on the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, a Colorado startup is quietly building a powerful AI infrastructure, fueled in part by an unlikely source: bitcoin mining.Crusoe Energy, headquartered in Denver, has transitioned from a company primarily focused on capturing and utilizing flared natural gas to power bitcoin mining operations to a leader in AI development and deployment.
“We’ve really focused Crusoe around AI-vertical integration, but there’s still a meaningful portion of cash flow coming from our bitcoin mining business,” said Chase Lochmiller, Crusoe’s CEO. “It’s just been within the last year we crossed into the majority of revenue coming from AI.”
Crusoe’s rapid growth is evident in its expanding workforce. with over 550 employees, the company boasts a significant presence in Colorado, with 200 employees based in the state. Another 120 work in San Francisco, where Lochmiller now resides, and the rest are spread across various global locations.
The company’s main manufacturing site, located in Arvada, is housed in the former Easter-Owens Electrical Co. plant, acquired by Crusoe in 2022. Plans are underway to expand the Arvada facility, adding approximately 50 new jobs to its current staff of 110. This expansion will enable Crusoe to operate a 24/7 manufacturing schedule, considerably increasing production capacity.
Crusoe’s success is not just about growth; it’s also about profitability.”Crusoe is cash-flow positive and that its customer base grew seven times in the last 12 months,” Lochmiller stated.
While Crusoe is making waves in the AI sector, it hasn’t abandoned its roots in sustainable energy. The company continues to operate over 200 bitcoin mining centers across seven states, from North Dakota to New Mexico. This network, the largest off-grid bitcoin mining operation in the country, captures 30 million cubic feet of flared gas per day – the equivalent of removing approximately 200,000 cars from the road.
Crusoe’s unique approach, combining AI innovation with sustainable energy practices, positions the company as a leader in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
