Manhattan Grand Jury Indicts Second Man in Bitcoin Kidnapping Case

William Duplessie, 32, faces indictment by a Manhattan grand jury in connection with the kidnapping and torture of an Italian man for his Bitcoin, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg‘s office.The indictment, handed up Friday, will remain sealed until Duplessie’s arraignment June 11.
Duplessie faces charges including kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and criminal possession of a weapon, police said. His lawyer declined comment.
Prosecutors allege that Duplessie and John Woeltz, 37, another crypto investor, enticed the 28-year-old victim to a Soho townhouse May 6 by threatening his family. the Italian national, whose name has not been released, was allegedly held captive for 17 days.
During that time, the two men allegedly tormented him with electrical wires, forced him to smoke crack, and dangled him from a fifth-story staircase.The victim eventually surrendered his computer password Friday morning and then escaped when his captors went to retrieve the device.
Duplessie appeared briefly in Manhattan court Friday morning following the grand jury’s decision. He was escorted in handcuffs,wearing a prison jumpsuit,and did not address the court. A judge reminded him that a protective order remained in effect.
Duplessie, listed as a founder or investor in blockchain companies, and Woeltz remain in custody as the investigation into the Bitcoin kidnapping continues.
The New York City Police Department is also investigating two detectives who provided security at the Manhattan townhouse where the kidnapping and torture allegedly occurred. The detectives are on modified leave pending the inquiry. the labor union representing the detectives stated there is “absolutely no indication” either officer witnessed any illegal activity.
