Cryptocurrency Tycoon Justin Sun Eats $6.2M Banana Art in Hong Kong
A cryptocurrency entrepreneur named Justin Sun purchased a piece of conceptual art titled “Comedian” for $6.2 million. This artwork features a banana taped to a wall. Last Friday, Sun held a press conference in Hong Kong, where he peeled the banana and ate it. He commented, “It tastes much better than other bananas. Indeed, quite good.”
“Comedian,” created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, first gained fame in 2019 at Art Basel Miami Beach. It sparked debate among festivalgoers about its meaning. One artist even removed and ate the banana during the event. Due to its popularity, the artwork was eventually taken down from viewing. Three editions sold for prices between $120,000 and $150,000.
Sun, who is the founder of the cryptocurrency platform TRON, won the auction at Sotheby’s in New York. His purchase included a certificate of authenticity that allows him to reproduce the artwork. He stated that the piece embodies a cultural phenomenon linking art, memes, and the cryptocurrency world. He insisted on eating the banana to honor its significance in art history and popular culture.
According to the South China Morning Post, the banana Sun consumed was bought in Hong Kong. Furthermore, Sun recently announced a $30 million investment in World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency venture started by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Sun’s platform, TRON, aims to contribute to innovation in America.
Last year, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged Sun with fraud and other violations. Sun claimed on X that the complaint lacks merit.
