Crystal Palace’s europa League Berth in Jeopardy Due to Ownership Concerns
Updated june 09,2025
Crystal Palace’s potential participation in the Europa League is under threat due to UEFA’s regulations regarding multi-club ownership. Article 5 of UEFA’s rulebook mandates that clubs demonstrate they are not involved in the management or sporting performance of more than one club in a UEFA competition.
The issue stems from John Textor’s ownership stake in Lyon. UEFA rules prioritize the team with the higher league finish, perhaps granting Lyon the Europa League spot over Crystal Palace. A complication arises as Harris and Blitzer, also have ownership in Brondby, who qualified for the Conference league.
To comply with UEFA regulations, clubs have previously divested shares or placed them into blind trusts. As a notable example, Ineos, owners of Manchester united, placed their shares in Nice and Lausanne-Sport into blind trusts to avoid conflicts of interest.
Crystal Palace has communicated to UEFA its commitment to taking immediate steps to meet the requirements. One potential measure involves Textor stepping down as a director of Crystal Palace, thereby relinquishing any influence over the club.
However, crystal Palace has indicated that they lack the legal authority to force Textor to place his shares into a blind trust. Shareholder agreements would need alteration, infringing on Textor’s property rights.
The club acknowledges that the current predicament was unforeseen and contributed to their failure to meet the ownership restructuring deadline of March 1.
What’s next
UEFA will review Crystal Palace’s proposed measures to determine if they satisfy the regulations. The outcome will decide weather Crystal Palace can compete in the Europa League or if another team will take their place.
