Train Journey Disrupted in Villa clara Province by Diarrheal Outbreak; Swift Response Prevents serious Illness
Jicotea, Villa Clara Province, Cuba – A routine journey on extra train number 18, traveling the Manzanillo-La habana route, was interrupted on Thursday when a significant number of passengers began experiencing symptoms of a diarrheal illness. The train made an emergency stop in the town of Jicotea, within the Ranchuelo municipality, prompting a rapid response from local health authorities.
According to Yandry Alfonso Chang, Director of Medical Assistance and Medicines in the province, health protocols were promptly activated to provide care for the affected travelers. A total of 653 passengers were assessed, with 29 requiring hospitalization. Five children were admitted to the José Luis Miranda pediatric hospital in Santa Clara, while 21 adults received care at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Provincial Hospital.
Authorities moved quickly to contain the situation and determine the source of the outbreak.Neil Reyes Miranda, Director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in Villa Clara, confirmed that a comprehensive investigation was launched, involving all travelers, to identify additional cases and implement necessary epidemiological control measures.
The response wasn’t limited to medical care. Leonardo Barreto García,Coordinator of Objectives and Programs of the Provincial Government,assured passengers that those not exhibiting symptoms were provided with snacks and safe drinking water. Plans are in place to resume the journey as soon as possible, and the government has committed to coordinating the return transportation to their respective provinces for those currently hospitalized, once they receive medical clearance.
Importantly, medical sources have confirmed that there have been no fatalities and no patients are currently reported to be in serious condition. Epidemiological monitoring is ongoing to prevent further spread and to understand the cause of the outbreak. The incident underscores the importance of robust public health infrastructure and rapid response capabilities in safeguarding public well-being, even during routine transportation.
