Cuba-US Boat Confrontation: 4 Dead, 6 Injured in Territorial Waters
Cuban Border Guards Kill Four in Confrontation with Florida-Registered Speedboat
Cuban officials say its border guard troops exchanged gunfire with a speedboat registered in Florida on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of four people aboard the vessel and injuries to six others. The incident occurred approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel in Cayo Falcones, Villa Clara province, according to a statement released by the Cuban Ministry of the Interior.
The Cuban Ministry of the Interior stated that a surface unit of the Border Guard Troops, consisting of five service members, approached the speedboat for identification. According to the statement, the crew of the speedboat “opened fire on the Cuban personnel, resulting in the injury of the commander of the Cuban vessel.”
Cuban troops returned fire, killing four people on the boat and injuring six more, the Ministry of the Interior reported. All those injured, both Cuban personnel and those on the speedboat, were evacuated and received medical attention.
The speedboat has been identified as having Florida registration number FL7726SH. Details surrounding the purpose of the vessel’s presence in Cuban waters remain unclear. A U.S. Official, speaking on background to the New York Times, indicated the boat was part of a flotilla attempting to bring relatives out of Cuba, and was not a U.S. Naval or Coast Guard vessel.
The confrontation comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Cuba. Recent issues include U.S. Restrictions on oil shipments to Cuba, particularly from Venezuela. However, the U.S. Announced Wednesday that it would allow some sales to Cuba’s private sector, a move that could potentially ease some economic pressures on the island nation.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced an investigation into the incident. “I’ve directed the Office of Statewide Prosecution to work with our federal, state, and law enforcement partners to begin an investigation,” he said in a post on X.
U.S. Officials have yet to issue a formal statement addressing the confrontation. The Cuban Ministry of the Interior emphasized Cuba’s determination to protect its territorial waters, stating that national defense is “a fundamental pillar” of the Cuban state in safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring stability in the region.
The case is currently under investigation by Cuban authorities, who are working to “fully clarify the facts,” according to the Ministry of the Interior’s statement. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
