Members of the Cuban community in New York City gathered for a rally in Midtown on May 9, 2026, to demand an end to the communist government in Cuba and call for intervention by the Trump administration. The demonstration took place outside the permanent mission of Cuba to the United Nations, where protesters called for freedom on the island.
Demonstrators used slogans such as Viva Cuba libre, abajo la dictadura, abajo!
to voice their opposition to the political system established when Fidel Castro took power in 1959. The rally occurred during a period of heightened tension between the United States and the Cuban government.
Calls for U.S. Intervention
Participants in the rally pleaded with President Trump to take action to bring about regime change in Cuba. Felix E. Roque, a Cuban national and former mayor of West New York, New Jersey, expressed his belief that the end of the current regime is approaching.
I believe it is. And I tell you, I know Mr. Trump doesn’t play around. I believe he’s going to keep his word and make a positive change for Cuba.
Felix E. Roque
Roque further described the Cuban dictatorship as a cancer
that must be treated and removed immediately. He stated that the demonstrators were showing they were not afraid and were standing in solidarity with those currently suffering in Cuba.
Economic Pressure and Sanctions
The protests coincide with a broader strategy by the U.S. Government to isolate the Cuban regime. During the week of May 4, 2026, the Trump administration imposed new financial sanctions targeting key Cuban entities. These measures are part of a massive pressure campaign specifically designed to force a change in government.

While President Trump has made repeated threats that Cuba is next,
U.S. Officials told The Associated Press that the United States is not currently seeking imminent military action against the country.
Humanitarian Crisis and Aid Deadlock
The rally also highlighted the deteriorating living conditions for civilians on the island. Bárbara Cambón, the President of the New York Cuban and Latin American Parade, noted that her family in Cuba reports a lack of food and a total absence of electricity.
I support our Cuban people. They protest about the freedom, they need freedom, they need electricity.
Bárbara Cambón
Efforts to provide relief have faced diplomatic hurdles. An American delegation met with the Cuban government in April 2026 to discuss humanitarian assistance. However, officials involved in those preliminary discussions told The Associated Press that they do not believe the communist government will accept tens of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid.
