HAVANA, Cuba (AP) — The Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (CECMmed) in Cuba is a leading authority in Latin America and globally, particularly noted for its work in establishing regulatory frameworks and fostering international cooperation. Judith Rius, director of the Department of Innovation and Access to Medicines and Health Technologies at the Pan American Health Association (PAHO/WHO), speaking at the V International Convention Cuba Health 2025, told Prensa Latina that CECMmed is one of PAHO’s key collaborators in the region.
Rius, who is participating in the “Regulatory International Symposium: encouraging local productions through a more efficient regulation” at the Havana Convention Palace, highlighted CECMmed’s leadership role in the continent. She expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the Cuban institution and acknowledged the significance of Cuba Health 2025 in showcasing Cuba’s regulatory work concerning pharmaceuticals, equipment, and medical devices.
“Cecmed currently has a regulatory strengthening ecosystem that for many nations still represents a goal to achieve,” Rius said. “This is added the ‘ultrahuman’ efforts they make to achieve their mission.”
Rius added that PAHO is proud to collaborate with CECMmed professionals and shares cuba’s vision of integrative health for all. She presented her conference, “Strengthening of regulatory systems and their impact on local medicines production: PAHO viewpoint,” at the symposium.
Cuba Health 2025 Highlights Regulatory Advances
Olga Lidia jacobo, director of CECMmed, told Prensa Latina that the regulatory symposium includes representatives from the National Biocubafarma industry, similar entities from about 10 countries, international organizations, and representatives from the European Union.
“It is indeed a forum that groups the entire issue of health regulation, crucial to advance in our health self-sufficiency in the region of the Americas, an imperative need to face pandemic situations such as COVID-19,” Jacobo said.
Science, Innovation, and Investment Forums
The second day of Cuba Health 2025 featured the international symposium on science and innovation in health systems progress, along with the V International conference on Medical Education in the 21st Century. The event took place at the Havana Convention Palace and the Pabexpo Fairground.
Concurrent events at Pabexpo included the III Foreign Investment Forum in the sector and the Global Health and International Cooperation Meeting.
