Dengue fever Outbreak in Cuba: A Public Health Crisis (2023-2024)
Table of Contents
What Happened: The Scale of the Outbreak
Cuba is currently experiencing its most severe dengue fever outbreak in history. As of February 2024, official reports indicate over 33 deaths and an estimated one-third of the population affected. The outbreak is primarily driven by Dengue serotype 3 (DENV-3), which had not circulated in Cuba for several decades, leaving a large proportion of the population with no prior immunity. This lack of immunity, combined with favorable environmental conditions for mosquito breeding, has contributed to the rapid spread of the virus.
The situation is particularly dire in Havana, but cases have been reported across the entire island. Hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed, and shortages of essential medical supplies are exacerbating the crisis. The cuban government has declared a national emergency and is mobilizing resources to combat the outbreak.
Understanding Dengue Fever
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that causes flu-like illness. Symptoms typically include high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, rash, and sometimes bleeding. There are four serotypes of the dengue virus (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4). infection with one serotype provides lifelong immunity to that specific serotype but only temporary cross-immunity to others.
How is Dengue Transmitted?
Dengue is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti and,to a lesser extent,Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These mosquitoes are active during the day and breed in stagnant water, such as containers, tires, and flower pots. The mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person infected with the dengue virus.
Symptoms and Severity
While many dengue infections are mild, some can develop into severe dengue, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Severe dengue is characterized by plasma leakage, severe bleeding, and organ impairment, and can be fatal if not treated promptly.
