The March 2026 World Baseball Classic will see a Cuban team markedly different from those that dominated international play for decades. While Cuba historically fielded rosters brimming with talent, the current squad relies heavily on players from international leagues, reflecting a significant shift in the nation’s baseball landscape.

A History of Dominance, A Present of Transition

For decades, Cuba was a powerhouse in international baseball, achieving considerable success in the Olympics – winning three gold medals and two silver medals in the first five Games where baseball was an official medal sport. However, the steady emigration of players to the United States and Japan has demonstrably weakened the team. A resurgence in 2023, with a surprising semifinal appearance, offered a glimpse of potential, but the challenges remain significant. Cuba’s best recent result was a runner-up finish in 2006, losing to Japan in the final.

This year’s competition presents a tougher pool, but analysts suggest advancing from the group stage remains a realistic goal, largely due to the strength of the Cuban pitching staff. The team will need to strategically deploy its pitching resources, prioritizing crucial games to maximize its chances of progression.

Pitching as a Key Strength

The most significant strength of the 2026 Cuban team appears to be its pitching depth. Right-handed pitcher Yariel Rodriguez, who signed a five-year, $32 million contract in 2024 after playing in Japan, is expected to be a key contributor. He has accumulated 159.2 innings over the past two years with a 3.83 ERA and even saw playoff action during Toronto’s 2025 World Series run.

Left-handed pitcher Livan Moinelo, a reliable starter for Softbank in Japan, boasts impressive statistics, going 12-3 with a 1.46 ERA in 167 innings in 2025. Throughout his Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) career, he has maintained a 42-17 record with a 1.80 ERA. Raidel Martínez, another Japanese-based pitcher, is considered one of the best relievers in Japan, posting a 3-2 record and a 1.11 ERA in 57 innings for Yomiuri in 2025, and has not recorded an ERA above 2.00 this decade.

Offensive Concerns and Roster Dynamics

While the pitching staff appears robust, the Cuban lineup faces questions regarding its ability to generate sufficient runs against top-tier competition. The roster features limited Major League Baseball (MLB) talent, a departure from previous iterations of the Cuban national team. This reliance on players from international leagues presents both challenges and potential advantages.

The roster construction has been marked by a number of late withdrawals and perceived communication issues. Several players with MLB experience, including Andy Ibanez, Daysbel Hernandez, and Andy Pages, declined to participate, citing a desire to focus on securing their positions on Major League rosters during spring training. The Cuban Baseball Federation’s approach to roster selection has also been questioned, with some players reportedly feeling their inclusion was taken for granted and experiencing a lack of communication.

Luis Robert, a significant inclusion in the 2023 tournament, opted not to participate this year unless all Cuban players, including those based in the United States, were included. This highlights the complex political and logistical considerations surrounding the formation of the Cuban national team.

The Impact of MLB Player Availability

The inclusion of MLB players is a relatively recent development for Team Cuba. Prior to 2023, the team largely consisted of players based in Cuba or other international leagues. The presence of players like Yoán Moncada and Luis Robert Jr. In 2023 marked a watershed moment for Cuban baseball, but their absence this year underscores the ongoing challenges in assembling a fully competitive roster.

Yoan Moncada’s return represents the only Major League position player on the roster. Having recently re-signed with the Angels for one year at $4 million, Moncada, once a top prospect, has shown flashes of brilliance when healthy. The diminished amount of MLB talent in the opening round, however, could potentially give Cuba an advantage if the team is effectively managed.

Puerto Rico’s Weakened Position and Pool A Dynamics

Cuba will compete in Pool A, where it will face host nation Puerto Rico. However, Puerto Rico’s roster has been weakened due to insurance constraints preventing many of their top players from participating. While American and Japanese teams did not face similar insurance issues, Puerto Rico reportedly considered withdrawing from the tournament before ultimately deciding to proceed with a less-than-full-strength squad. This development has tempered expectations for Pool A, making it a more unpredictable competition than initially anticipated.

The 2026 World Baseball Classic will provide a crucial test for Cuban baseball, showcasing the nation’s evolving talent pool and its ability to compete on the international stage despite the ongoing challenges of player emigration and roster construction.
