Fulmer Returns to Cubs; Pearson Optioned to Iowa

ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs bolstered their pitching options Monday, selecting michael fulmer’s contract from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, the Cubs optioned right-hander Nate Pearson to Iowa. The moves come ahead of a four-game series against the st.Louis Cardinals.
Fulmer, 32, is making a return to the cubs after pitching in 58 games for them in 2023, posting a 3-5 record with two saves and a 4.42 ERA. He missed the 2024 season after undergoing UCL revision surgery in October 2023.
A former AL rookie of the Year with Detroit in 2016, Fulmer also underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2019. He returned to the majors in July 2020 during the pandemic-shortened season. The veteran pitcher’s role is to provide stability to the Cubs’ bullpen.
Fulmer reflected on his recovery from his frist Tommy John surgery. “It took me a few months to get stuff and velo back,” Fulmer said. “Once I got all the game reps I needed, my stuff came back. So, I think we’re getting on that timeline now where I’m feeling good, body’s feeling great, no complaints, stuff’s starting to come back a little bit and I’m really just excited.”
Before re-signing with Chicago,Fulmer briefly signed a minor league deal with Boston in February 2024. He pitched in one game for the Red Sox in April against Tampa Bay, allowing three runs on four hits before being designated for assignment. He than signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on April 22, recording a 1-0 record with a 2.96 ERA in 15 games with Iowa.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged Fulmer’s perseverance. “You no he’s went through a lot, you know he’s sticking with it,” Counsell said.”It’s a sign of what you’re made of, I think.It really is. I know moments like getting back to the big leagues are crucial, and they validate a lot of the hard work and a lot of the rehabs and a lot of the things like that. You’re happy for guys like Michael who get a shot again.”
pearson was recalled from Iowa on Saturday but struggled in his Sunday outing against Seattle, surrendering five runs on five hits and two walks in two innings.
The Cubs, with a 46-31 record, began play Monday with a 3 1/2 game lead over Milwaukee and a 4 1/2 game lead over St.louis in the NL Central Division. Their playoff role is looking promising.
