The Chicago Cubs have unveiled a poignant tribute to Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, adorning their uniforms with a special ceremonial patch in memory of the beloved former player, just one day after his passing.Sandberg, a ten-time all-Star with the Cubs, died Monday at the age of 65.
A Lasting Tribute on the Field
The newly introduced patch, positioned over the Cubs logo on the players’ sleeves, features a striking design: a bold red number ”23,” sandberg’s iconic uniform number, set against a classic blue background. His signature is elegantly incorporated in white lettering, serving as a personal and recognizable mark of remembrance.
The team shared a video on social media showcasing the patch being meticulously sewn onto the uniforms prior to Tuesday night’s game in Milwaukee. During pre-game warmups, the Cubs players also expressed their solidarity and respect by wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the heartfelt message,”FO23VER.”
Cubs manager Craig Counsell spoke about the meaning of the tribute, acknowledging the emotional weight of honoring a figure like sandberg.”It’s sad as it kind of hits home I think a little more,” Counsell stated. “But in the other way,you want to honor Ryno the best we can and shine a spotlight on a great life lived, for all the great things he represented as a man and as a Chicago cub.”
A moment of silence was observed to honor Sandberg’s memory before the game commenced on Tuesday.
Reflecting on Sandberg’s Legacy
Counsell also reflected on a previous tribute to sandberg, the unveiling of a statue outside Wrigley Field in June 2024, which captured the second baseman in his signature defensive crouch. This occurred as Sandberg was battling cancer. “I was thinking about the day the statue was unveiled,” Counsell shared. “That’s my favorite day as a Chicago Cub, just the team being there and fans in a different setting than in the ballpark, and watching Ryno and his family and knowing what he was going through and everything.”
sandberg’s illustrious career with the Cubs spanned 15 years, during which he achieved remarkable statistics: a .285 batting average, 282 home runs, 1,061 rbis, and 344 stolen bases. His extraordinary performance earned him the National League MVP award in 1984. Though he began his MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981,playing 13 games, his trade to Chicago the following January marked the beginning of his legendary tenure with the Cubs.
Roster Moves Alongside Homage
In related news, the Cubs also made roster adjustments prior to their matchup with the Brewers. Pitcher Chris Flexen was designated for assignment, while fellow right-hander Gavin Hollowell was recalled from Triple-A Iowa.
Flexen, 31, had a strong start to the season but had recently struggled, surrendering 15 runs and 22 hits in 14 2/3 innings over his last five appearances. Counsell acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions, stating, “It wasn’t a fun conversation. It never is. Chris has been a contributor on this team. He’s contributed in some big ways to this team. Sometimes it doesn’t feel fair.”
