Updated June 04, 2025
The New York City mayoral race is intensifying as nine Democratic candidates prepare for their first debate
Wednesday night. With the primary election just weeks away on June 24, the contenders will likely focus on
frontrunner and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo, who resigned in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations and scrutiny over his management’s handling
of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes, is attempting a political comeback. Despite these controversies, his
high name recognition has propelled him to the top of the polls.
Assembly member Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is expected to be a key challenger. Other candidates
taking part in the debate include City Council Speaker adrienne Adams, city comptroller Brad Lander, and several
other state and city officials.

Notably absent from the debate is incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who announced he would run for re-election as an
independent after his poll numbers declined. The Democratic primary winner is expected to be the favorite in
the heavily Democratic city.
